Fed: Report finds size does matter on future export stars

New research shows size does matter when it comes to Australia's future export stars-- but small is better than big.

A report commissioned by Austrade has found the next generation of exporters will besmall, knowledge-based businesses -- in contrast to the manufacturing and agriculturalgiants of the past.

They'll have been operating for just a few years, be based in country towns as wellas capital cities, and will use new ways of going international -- such as joint venturesand strategic alliances.

But the report, released today, says only four per cent of small-to-medium businessesare already exporters -- the second-lowest ratio on a list of 22 industrialised countries.

The list is topped by Austria on 68 per cent, Britain coming in at 48 per cent, andCanada on 15 per cent.

The United States is bottom of the class with just three per cent.
