Fed: Mourners farwell old Anzac

Mourners have paid their respects to one of Australia's best loved World War I veterans
at his state funeral in Sydney.

MARCEL CAUX, who was 105 when he died last Sunday, was best known for his reluctance
in talking about his war experiences.

The veteran broke an 80-year-old silence on the subject when he attended a Remembrance
Day ceremony in Sydney for the first time in 2001.

As a 16-year-old, Mr CAUX lied about his age to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force.

He fought in Egypt, France and on the Western Front, where he was wounded three times.

Representatives from the CAUX family, the military, Salvation Army and the French embassy
attended the service at the Salvo's Sydney Congress Hall.

After the service Mr CAUX's casket was placed on an army gun carriage and take under
military escort to the Northern Suburbs crematorium for a private family service.
